South Kent Soccer Alumni Game Returns for 2025 Alumni Weekend

There鈥檚 a buzz on the Hillside 鈥 and it鈥檚 not just the usual spring energy. Over 25-30 alumni players are already talking, texting, and preparing to lace up for the return of the South Kent Alumni Soccer Game, coming back for Alumni Weekend 2025. With deep roots and an impressive legacy, South Kent Soccer continues to unite generations of players in a celebration of the sport and the values it teaches.

Soccer has long held a special place at 淫人色欲社, although it wasn鈥檛 always so. In the School鈥檚 early days, fall was reserved for football, while hockey, baseball, tennis, and crew made up the rest of the athletic calendar. Occasional experiments with skiing, golf, and soccer came and went 鈥 until soccer finally found its footing.

That breakthrough came in the fall of 1934, when pick-up games became so popular that Mr. Cunningham proposed forming an official team. Fourteen boys signed up, and by November, South Kent was playing matches against Salisbury and Kent. The 1935 yearbook proudly documented those early games:

鈥淥n November 27 we journeyed north to test our ability at Salisbury. Besides enjoying ourselves tremendously, we defeated our plucky opponents by a score of three to one鈥 The last game here was played against Kent. We can make little comment on the game except that Kent was far superior and deserved the victory of eight to one. Mr. Cunningham did a fine job and we thank him for it.鈥

That spirit of resilience and camaraderie laid the foundation for a soccer tradition that has only grown stronger.

In 1975, during South Kent鈥檚 coeducational years, the School even fielded a girls’ soccer team 鈥 a team that included future University of Connecticut standout Kathleen Lindenmeyer, who helped launch the first-ever women鈥檚 soccer program at UConn.

Fast forward to 2004, when soccer took center stage once again under the leadership of Coach Owen Finberg. The program flourished, winning NEPSSA championships in 2006 and 2009. Today, Coach Colin Hodge carries the torch, restoring the program鈥檚 prominence and continuing to build on its proud tradition.

鈥淭he return of the alumni game is more than just a match,鈥 says Head Coach Colin Hodge. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a celebration of our shared identity 鈥 the effort, the culture, and the brotherhood that make South Kent Soccer so special.鈥

Longtime coach and faculty member Jesse Brennan also remains a guiding presence, helping to instill South Kent鈥檚 鈥淭rinity of Values鈥 鈥 Simplicity, Self-Reliance, and Directness of Purpose 鈥 into every player.

鈥淲hen you see alumni come back, it reminds you that this program doesn鈥檛 end at graduation,鈥 says alumni lead, . 鈥淭he lessons learned on this field stay with you, and the bonds only grow stronger over time.鈥

South Kent鈥檚 soccer legacy now spans over 200 alumni players who have gone on to compete in college and beyond 鈥 including at the highest levels of the NCAA and the professional game. In the 2024 season alone:

  • Ethan Prescott and Marco Silva helped lead Marshall University to the NCAA Division I Final Four.
  • Nick Washington (Providence) and Maclin Stover (Fordham) also made the NCAA Tournament.
  • In Division III, Eujin Chae and Will Sawin (Middlebury), Adrian Trott, Luke Peltz (Bowdoin), and Aiden Heffner all advanced to postseason play, with Middlebury reaching the Final Four.

South Kent Soccer is more than a team 鈥 it鈥檚 a family, bonded across decades by shared goals, hard work, and a love of the game. We can鈥檛 wait to welcome alumni back to the Hillside in 2025 for what promises to be an unforgettable match and reunion.

Pathways Speaker Series: Marge Smith & SKS 100 Year History & Cultural Ties

淫人色欲社 recently welcomed back Marge Smith鈥 a school historian, former Director, and current Curator of the Kent Historical Society鈥攆or a captivating Pathways Series talk that bridged generations and continents.

A lifelong member of the South Kent community, Marge reflected on her upbringing on the Hillside as one of the large group of 鈥淔aculty Brats鈥濃攁 term affectionately used to describe children of faculty members who grew up immersed in campus life. Her personal stories painted a vivid picture of South Kent鈥檚 past, grounded in the values that continue to shape its future.

Marge鈥檚 connection to the School runs deep, shaped by the legacy of her parents, Maggie and Art Smith. Her mother, Maggie Smith, was a beloved art teacher whose creative spirit still echoes through the halls of the Maggie Smith Visual Arts Center, named in her honor. Through her teachings in oil painting, watercolors, etching, sculpture, and art history, Maggie empowered generations of students to explore and express themselves. Her frequent trips to New York City exposed students to world-class museums and the transformative power of art.

Marge鈥檚 father, Art Smith, served as a dedicated faculty member and crew coach, and a new boy mentor during the 1950s and 鈥60s. Together, the Smiths left an indelible mark on South Kent, retiring in 1979 after decades of service. Their commitment to education, culture, and character helped define the South Kent experience.

During her talk, Marge spoke about the evolution of boarding schools, with a focus on how South Kent has grown while holding fast to its core values. She shared the story of Suke Hasegawa, the School鈥檚 first Asian student, and the early exchange program fostered by her father鈥攁 reflection of his deep appreciation for Asian cultures. The Smith family warmly welcomed international students, facilitating a powerful cross-cultural exchange that highlighted shared humanity in the years following World War II.

One of the most moving traditions that grew from this connection was the planting of cherry trees to commemorate each Japanese student鈥檚 graduation. These trees remain a living symbol of South Kent鈥檚 commitment to global friendship and understanding.

Though South Kent has evolved, Marge reminded listeners that its essence remains unchanged. The School still cultivates curiosity, resilience, and global citizenship鈥攙alues instilled in her own childhood and carried forward by today鈥檚 students.

Her talk was not just a trip down memory lane鈥攊t was a testament to the enduring spirit of South Kent, and a powerful reminder of the importance of honoring the past while embracing the future.

Join Marge at Alumni Weekend for book signings, and talks.聽 For information about preordering visit, .

Pathways Speaker Series: McFate & Service Beyond the Hillside

In recognition of Presidents Day and all of the esteemed service members from South Kent, we are excited to welcome . McFate鈥檚 journey has taken him from the classrooms and athletic fields of South Kent to the front lines of modern warfare, global strategy, and academia.

A Visionary in Future Warfare

Dr. Sean McFate is a strategic maverick. Once in a generation, a uniquely qualified scholar-warrior with rare insight emerges to offer a divergent vision of future war. While many emphasize technology and firepower as the key to military dominance, McFate argues that the real battlefield advantage lies in strategic thinking. He challenges conventional wisdom, advocating for a paradigm shift in how Western powers approach conflict and security.

A Career Unlike Any Other

After graduating from South Kent in 1988, McFate embarked on a military career that saw him serve as a paratrooper in the US Army鈥檚 82nd Airborne Division. His path then led him into the world of paramilitary contracting and private intelligence, where he operated in some of the most volatile regions of the world. From negotiating with African warlords and raising armies for U.S. interests to conducting strategic reconnaissance for oil companies and preventing a potential genocide in the Rwanda region, McFate鈥檚 experiences are as diverse as they are impactful.

Scholar and Author

Despite his deep involvement in high-stakes global affairs, McFate pursued academic excellence, earning degrees from Brown University, Harvard University, and a PhD from the London School of Economics. Today, he is a leading voice in military strategy, a professor at Georgetown and Syracuse universities, and an acclaimed author. His writing, both non-fiction and fiction, sheds light on modern warfare in ways that traditional analyses cannot. His 2016 novel, Shadow War, originally conceived as a memoir, evolved into a gripping narrative exploring the shadowy world of covert operations in Eastern Ukraine鈥攄rawing heavily from his own experiences.

Join Us for This Special Event

淫人色欲社 invites students, faculty, and alumni to join us for this exclusive virtual Pathways talk with Dr. Sean McFate. His insights into military strategy, national security, and global conflict promise to be both enlightening and inspiring. 鈥淚鈥檓 honored to share my journey with the South Kent community,鈥 McFate said. 鈥淢y time at South Kent shaped my character and leadership skills in ways I still draw upon today.鈥

Peter Thompson, a fellow South Kent alumnus and military veteran who works with the Advancement Team to support alumni engagement, emphasized the significance of McFate鈥檚 visit: 鈥淪ean鈥檚 career exemplifies the values we uphold at South Kent鈥攃ourage, intellect, and service. His perspective on modern warfare and leadership will be invaluable for our students and alumni alike.鈥

Don鈥檛 miss the opportunity to hear from one of South Kent鈥檚 most distinguished alumni as he shares his remarkable journey and groundbreaking ideas on the future of warfare.

Reflecting on the upcoming event, Professor Hasegawa said, “South Kent instilled in me a deep sense of curiosity and resilience. I am honored to share my journey and discuss how the lessons I learned on the Hillside have shaped my work in international diplomacy.”

Joining us from the Hillside will be Head of School Brian Sullivan, The Reverend Steve Klots, and South Kent alumni leaders Dillon Duncan 鈥04 and Rich Brande 鈥88. Reflecting on this milestone event, Brian Sullivan shared, “South Kent鈥檚 influence extends far beyond the Hillside, and it鈥檚 truly special to bring our global community together to celebrate a century of excellence. This reunion is a testament to the lasting impact of a South Kent education.”

The Shanghai event will feature a variety of exciting activities, including a scenic boat cruise and an evening of karaoke. The highlight of the weekend will be a dinner hosted by Ron Xin Wang 鈥11 at his renowned restaurant, the Shanghai Yichun Garden Seafood Restaurant. Attendees will have the chance to reconnect with fellow alumni, share memories, and celebrate South Kent鈥檚 enduring spirit.

Following the gathering in China, the team will travel to Seoul and Tokyo for additional alumni events, further strengthening the bonds within our international community.

The Reverend Klots emphasized the significance of this reunion, stating, “The spirit of South Kent is one of lifelong brotherhood, and it鈥檚 incredible to see that bond transcending borders. This journey will not only reconnect alumni but also inspire future generations of South Kent students.”

We are excited to bring the South Kent family together in Asia for the first time. Stay tuned for more details, and we look forward to seeing you there!
