淫人色欲社 proudly congratulates Chris Birden Jr. 鈥26 on his commitment to the University of Miami. A dominant presence on the court, Chris has established himself as one of the top power forwards in prep basketball, earning the opportunity to continue his career at the Division I level.

Arriving on the Hillside from Louisiana, Chris has fully embraced the boarding school experience, developing into a confident and mature student leader. Both on and off the court, he has exemplified dedication, resilience, and character, using his time on the Hillside to prepare for the challenges and opportunities ahead. On the court, Chris brings elite athleticism combined with knockdown 3-point shooting, making him a tough matchup on both ends. He rebounds at a high level and runs the floor extremely well in transition, creating constant pressure.

Chris鈥檚 growth on the Hillside is a direct reflection of South Kent鈥檚 individualized approach to player development. Through tailored and consistent training and a focus on both skill refinement and basketball IQ, he has used his time here with intention. That commitment has shaped him into a confident, mature player who understands the game at a high level and leads by example, fully maximizing every opportunity along the way.

鈥溡松 is fortunate to have Chris on the Hillside and to feel the impact he has made on our basketball program. He鈥檚 an exceptional player and an even better young man. We鈥檙e excited to see him continue his journey at the University of Miami and will be cheering him on every step of the way!” – Director of Basketball, Craig Carter

The South Kent community looks forward to following his continued achievements in this next chapter. Congratulations, Chris!

淫人色欲社 students recently had the unique opportunity to step behind the camera and into the world of professional filmmaking, as our Photography & Digital Media class, along with members of the Advanced Media Group, participated in an immersive, hands-on course led by alumnus John Miller ’08.

Now based in Houston, Texas, Miller returned to the Hillside with a meaningful purpose: to film footage for an upcoming documentary on fellow South Kent alumnus Isaiah Thomas 鈥08, a professional basketball player and 2x NBA All-Star. Having been part of an Emmy Award鈥搘inning multimedia project based in Seattle, Miller brought both high-level experience and creative insight to campus. The project not only provided students with real-world filmmaking experience, but also created a powerful full-circle moment for alumni and students alike.

For Miller, coming back to South Kent was about more than just the project.
鈥淭he Hillside had a profound impact on me, and this was just one way I could give back,鈥 he shared.

Throughout the experience, students were not simply observers; they were active collaborators. Miller encouraged them to think creatively, contribute ideas, and engage in the storytelling process.

鈥淭he students actually helped me a lot in the storytelling experience. I provided them the opportunity to have creative input, and in return, I received several great shots of the campus that I wouldn鈥檛 have captured 辞迟丑别谤飞颈蝉别.鈥

In addition to gaining hands-on experience, students鈥 contributions may extend far beyond the classroom. The on-campus footage they helped capture, through camera operation, shot composition, and creative direction, positions them for inclusion in the film鈥檚 credits should the documentary be picked up by a major distributor such as ESPN or The Players鈥 Tribune. It鈥檚 a rare and meaningful opportunity for students to see their work recognized on a professional stage.

Moments like these highlighted not only the students鈥 growing technical skills, but also their confidence and creativity; qualities that are continually nurtured on the Hillside. Above all, the experience reflected the joy of the creative process and the supportive environment that makes it possible.

鈥淲e had fun. It鈥檚 fun to be creative, and I think SKS provides an environment where it鈥檚 safe to be yourself.鈥

By blending professional-level work with student collaboration, this immersive course exemplified the kind of hands-on, meaningful learning that defines the South Kent experience, where alumni return to inspire, and students are empowered to create.

The celebration included custom posters, framed photo collages, and a special on-court ceremony, where each senior had the opportunity to present flowers to their parents or guardians as a token of appreciation. Just two months before the 2024-25 basketball season tips off, 淫人色欲社, former NEPSAC champions, has appointed Craig Carter as the new Head Director of its basketball program. Carter, who served as assistant coach last season under the renowned Raphael Chillious, steps into the role with a commitment to carry forward the legacy Chillious has built at South Kent, known for its premier basketball program.

Reflecting on his new role, Carter expressed the excitement and responsibility he feels as he succeeds Coach Chillious. 鈥淭his is a thrilling challenge in my career and a significant responsibility,鈥 Carter said. 鈥淐oach Chills has set a high standard in player development and has shaped South Kent basketball into a national contender. I鈥檓 honored to continue that legacy, especially with such a talented group of players this season.鈥

Carter brings not only a wealth of experience but also a natural ability to lead. A former two-time captain at Rutgers University, he competed in Division I basketball and demonstrated his leadership on the court during the 1989 and 1991 seasons. Since joining South Kent in the fall of 2023, Carter has quickly become an advocate for student-athletes, earning him the role of Dean of Students alongside his coaching duties.

On his leadership style, Carter emphasizes the importance of trust and respect between coach and players. 鈥淲hile I鈥檓 grateful to be recognized as a leader, it鈥檚 vital that my team trusts me. I鈥檓 intentional with my words and avoid harsh criticism, even in moments when a player misses an easy shot. Instead, I aim to build them up, offering encouragement that fuels their resilience,鈥 he explained. 鈥淚 also share lessons from my own mistakes in high school and college to help them learn without repeating the same errors. My goal is to prepare and motivate them to give their best effort every time they鈥檙e on the court.鈥

With 24 years of coaching experience at various colleges and universities, including over 15 years at the NCAA Division I level, Carter brings a diverse and seasoned perspective to South Kent. Head of School Brian Sullivan expressed his confidence in Carter鈥檚 leadership, noting, 鈥淐raig鈥檚 extensive background in coaching both men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 teams across different levels uniquely positions him to connect with and inspire our players. His leadership will undoubtedly enhance our basketball program and benefit the entire South Kent community.鈥

The South Kent basketball season opens tonight at 6:30 p.m. in Brown Gym, where the Cardinals will face off against Redemption Christian Academy. With Coach Carter鈥檚 leadership and the team鈥檚 shared camaraderie, South Kent basketball is set to shine brightly on the court once again.

淫人色欲社 is pleased to announce Craig Carter as the new Director of Basketball and Head Coach of South Kent鈥檚 nationally revered Prep Basketball Team.

A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Carter made a name for himself as both a player and coach. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, where he also played for the University’s Division I basketball program. Craig played in the NCAA Tournament with Rutgers in 1989 and 1991, was a four-year letterwinner for the Scarlet Knights from 1987-91, and was a two-time team captain, earning an Atlantic-10 All-Tournament Team selection in 1989.

After College, Craig served as an elementary school teacher in Brooklyn for two years and worked for Chase Bank and GE as a financial analyst in foreign exchange. While teaching, he started his coaching career at the high school level and has since garnered twenty-four years of basketball coaching experience at various colleges and universities across the country on both the men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 sides. In that time, he spent over fifteen years coaching at the NCAA Division 1 level and spent two years as a Director of Basketball Operations at the University of Massachusetts and the University of North Carolina Greensboro.

In his most recent positions prior to joining 淫人色欲社 in 2023, Craig was the Assistant Women鈥檚 Basketball Coach at Florida State University (under Coach Sue Semrau and Coach Brooke Wyckoff) for two years and the Associate Head Coach of Women鈥檚 Basketball at the University of Wisconsin (under Coach Jonathan Tsipis) for five years. His former Head Coach, Sue Semrau, spoke highly of Craig: 鈥淚t鈥檚 a privilege to be able to work with Coach Carter. He is a coach with integrity and extensive experience. He is 鈥渇luent鈥 in the game of basketball, having hands-on experience in every area. He is also versatile, having served in corporate America and as a teacher. As a former player at Rutgers, he understands the needs and the challenges of the athletes we coach.鈥

Prior to coaching women鈥檚 college basketball, Craig spent fifteen years assistant coaching men鈥檚 basketball at institutions such as Cornell University, Longwood University, Skidmore College, Siena College, Elizabeth City State University, and his alma mater, Rutgers University.

Coach Carter has become known as a top-notch recruiter and his player development abilities have been evident over the years in both men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 sides. In the 2018-19 year, Wisconsin鈥檚 Marsha Howard earned second-team All-Big Ten honors under Craig鈥檚 guidance, averaging 14.7 points. Fellow Badger teammate Cayla McMorris became a two-time Honorable Mention Big Ten performer under his watch as well in 2017 and 2018. Craig also assisted with the development of notable Siena Alum Kenny Hasbrouck, who became one of the best players in program history with 1,917 career points and 248 steals.

Outside of coaching, and in his short time at South Kent, Craig has already proven himself as a tremendous school leader and student advocate. His commitment to South Kent, its Mission and Values, and his enthusiasm for investing in and developing student-athletes both on and off the court has helped earn him the promotion to Dean of Students this past summer.

South Kent is lucky to have Coach Carter take over its legacy premier basketball program from the esteemed former Director of Athletics, Director of Basketball, and Head Coach of Prep Basketball Raphael Chillious, who recommended Coach Carter for the position.

鈥淚 have been at South Kent for nine wonderful years and two different stints. I can truly call the Hillside home and the basketball program, it鈥檚 like one of my kids. I have known Coach Carter for over 20 years, and I am honored to leave this program and these talented players in his capable hands. He will assuredly continue to recruit great student-athletes who will continue to keep South Kent on the map as one of the country鈥檚 premier prep programs.鈥

Craig鈥檚 wealth of experience, passion for the game, and deep commitment to the development of young men will undoubtedly benefit the School鈥檚 basketball program and enhance the overall athletic experience for the student-athletes. With the support of his daughter, Amber, and grandson, Ellis, the School is excited to have Craig guide the exciting next chapter in South Kent Basketball.

Please join us in congratulating Coach Craig Carter on his new role. We look forward to his continued leadership both on and off the court.

Former South Kent power forward Chris Ortiz has his sights set on Paris, as the Puerto Rican basketball team qualified for the Olympics on July 7 in San Juan. After drubbing Bahrain, Italy, and Mexico by double digits, they knocked off Lithuania 79-68 in front of 13,500 raucous Puerto Rican fans, cementing their first Olympic appearance since 2004. Since 2017, Ortiz has been a dominant presence for the Puerto Rican frontcourt, logging many minutes and filling the stat sheet.

鈥淧laying in front of our fans and clinching our spot in the Olympics is something I can鈥檛 even describe. [It’s] most definitely the best feeling I鈥檝e had while playing basketball. I鈥檓 super humbled to have had that experience, and I鈥檒l remember that day for eternity,鈥 says Ortiz.

Photo: Fiba Basketball

During the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament, Chris Ortiz scored 7.3 points and tallied over 5 rebounds per game, shooting an efficient 50% from the field. His physicality proved to stifle Bahrain and Mexico, scoring 11 points in both games. In a back-and-forth contest against Italy, Ortiz took on a defensive role, snatching 8 rebounds and plenty of hustle.

For high school, Ortiz attended Christ the King School in the Bronx and then spent a year at South Kent playing under Coach Kelvin Jefferson. Ortiz is thankful for the time he spent on the Hillside, allowing him to grow into the player he knew he could be.

鈥淚 can honestly say South Kent not only saved my basketball career but rebirthed it. Coach Jefferson was an amazing coach whose lessons I still carry to this day, and Mr. Bonis helped me gain a perspective on mental toughness,鈥 says Ortiz.

In a recent power rankings list supplied by CBS Sports HQ, Puerto Rico sits at #9 in the world thanks to their impeccable defensive display in the qualifying tournament. Chris Ortiz has an experienced supporting cast that pesters their opponents on every possession, including New Orleans Pelicans guard Jose Alvarado and former South Kent point guard Tremont Waters. Look for the Puerto Ricans to play spirited basketball and force their opponents to work hard for every basket, the exact formula that has enabled them to defeat quality competition this calendar year. Despite playing in a talented pool, Ortiz accepts the challenge and sees this as a golden opportunity for his team.

鈥淭he main thing for our team to succeed in our pool is to play together and limit the amount of mistakes we make. The more intentional we are about being focused and playing for one another, the better chance we鈥檒l have to beat anyone we face.鈥

It was 20 years ago in Athens, Greece when Puerto Rico had their last run in the Olympics and shocked the world when they defeated the United States and squashed their 16-year unbeaten streak. On August 3, Ortiz and company will have a chance to repeat history, squaring up against a stacked American roster in their second Group C pool play game. Puerto Rico will play two additional fixtures against Nikola Jokic and Serbia and South Sudan, who are making their first ever Olympic games appearance. Pool play will commence on July 28 with the championship game set for Sunday, August 11. Tune in and watch the former cardinal’s Olympic run!

At 淫人色欲社, our long standing traditions are crucial to maintaining a strong culture and enduring the school’s 100-year history. At the same time, as the world and educational landscape changes, new traditions must evolve. In 2022, in the wake of COVID, Fifth Form student Griffin Davis started a new tradition that further improved an already tight-knit community: the 淫人色欲社 Intramural Basketball League . While COVID still plagued schools nationwide, Davis found a way to unite the student body and keep his fellow classmates active amidst the isolation and protocols.聽

View this post on Instagram

鈥淚 wanted to bring the school together because of COVID and being separated into cohorts by sports teams for a year and a half. What better way to do that than getting a bunch of guys on the court together?鈥 Davis exclaimed.

The students seized this opportunity and contributed to the SKSIBL鈥檚 rapid growth and excitement generated around campus and as you can tell from it is still going strong!

鈥淪tudents were still obliged to wear masks, and it was difficult to find time to separate ourselves from the daily schedule. So this idea came at a great time,鈥 said Fifth Form Student and SKSIBL鈥檚 current Commissioner Austin Michaud. It was another way to stay physically active while meeting students you do not know, and that鈥檚 why we knew this would be the start of something long standing.鈥

To this day, Griffin Davis remains in touch with the kids organizing the league and the players; he is proud of the progress it鈥檚 made since he graduated.

鈥淚 remember right before the start of the SKSIBL, I didn鈥檛 even know half the names that were signed up. Quickly, it morphed into something bigger than I would鈥檝e ever imagined. It鈥檚 a nice feeling to see new guys at the school enjoying it even after my time on the Hillside.鈥

Now in its third season, the SKSIBL has evolved into a 9-team league, with each team coached by Prep or Development Basketball players. Games are held every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the spring trimester, and the best 8 records compete in the playoffs in early May. This season, Commissioner Austin Michaud introduced a new element to the league 鈥 a mock draft. This process involved drafting players to the teams until there were 10-12 students per team, adding a fresh twist to the league.聽

鈥淚t鈥檚 been a lot of fun taking an innovative approach to this league, listening to the students, and executing tasks how I see fit. Learning how to incorporate some of their ideas while setting appropriate boundaries improves my leadership skills, which I鈥檓 very thankful for,鈥 says Michaud.聽

Dorell Wright was a generational talent at the high school ranks, as he started his basketball journey in Los Angeles at Washington Preparatory School. Dorell then transferred to Leuzinger High School in Lawndale, CA, where his game began to take off and turn heads nationwide. This allowed him to play for a fifth year at South Kent, where he dropped over 29 points per game under coach Raphael Chillious.聽

While Dorell Wright initially declared for DePaul for college, he ultimately decided to go into the NBA Draft out of high school, as he was drafted 19th overall to the Miami Heat. He played for the Heat until 2010 and won an NBA Championship alongside Dwayne Wade and Shaquille O鈥橬eal. His NBA career continued through 2016 as he had stints with the Golden State Warriors, Portland Trail Blazers, and Philadelphia 76ers before returning to the Heat. Following his second time in Miami, Wright played overseas until 2020.

Along with his incredible basketball talents, Dorell Wright has done a lot of philanthropic work. After his playing career, Wright founded the Wright Legacy Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to cultivating young scholars into productive and active participants in society. The Wright Legacy Foundation, also co-run by his brother Deion Wright and his wife Mia Wright, gives money to schools in need for advanced classroom training and educational advancement, providing more opportunities for athletes to take the collegiate step. Furthermore, Dorell Wright is still an active member of the 淫人色欲社 community, as he is a member of the Board of Trustees.
