South Kent Soccer Alumni Game Returns for 2025 Alumni Weekend

There鈥檚 a buzz on the Hillside 鈥 and it鈥檚 not just the usual spring energy. Over 25-30 alumni players are already talking, texting, and preparing to lace up for the return of the South Kent Alumni Soccer Game, coming back for Alumni Weekend 2025. With deep roots and an impressive legacy, South Kent Soccer continues to unite generations of players in a celebration of the sport and the values it teaches.

Soccer has long held a special place at 淫人色欲社, although it wasn鈥檛 always so. In the School鈥檚 early days, fall was reserved for football, while hockey, baseball, tennis, and crew made up the rest of the athletic calendar. Occasional experiments with skiing, golf, and soccer came and went 鈥 until soccer finally found its footing.

That breakthrough came in the fall of 1934, when pick-up games became so popular that Mr. Cunningham proposed forming an official team. Fourteen boys signed up, and by November, South Kent was playing matches against Salisbury and Kent. The 1935 yearbook proudly documented those early games:

鈥淥n November 27 we journeyed north to test our ability at Salisbury. Besides enjoying ourselves tremendously, we defeated our plucky opponents by a score of three to one鈥 The last game here was played against Kent. We can make little comment on the game except that Kent was far superior and deserved the victory of eight to one. Mr. Cunningham did a fine job and we thank him for it.鈥

That spirit of resilience and camaraderie laid the foundation for a soccer tradition that has only grown stronger.

In 1975, during South Kent鈥檚 coeducational years, the School even fielded a girls’ soccer team 鈥 a team that included future University of Connecticut standout Kathleen Lindenmeyer, who helped launch the first-ever women鈥檚 soccer program at UConn.

Fast forward to 2004, when soccer took center stage once again under the leadership of Coach Owen Finberg. The program flourished, winning NEPSSA championships in 2006 and 2009. Today, Coach Colin Hodge carries the torch, restoring the program鈥檚 prominence and continuing to build on its proud tradition.

鈥淭he return of the alumni game is more than just a match,鈥 says Head Coach Colin Hodge. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a celebration of our shared identity 鈥 the effort, the culture, and the brotherhood that make South Kent Soccer so special.鈥

Longtime coach and faculty member Jesse Brennan also remains a guiding presence, helping to instill South Kent鈥檚 鈥淭rinity of Values鈥 鈥 Simplicity, Self-Reliance, and Directness of Purpose 鈥 into every player.

鈥淲hen you see alumni come back, it reminds you that this program doesn鈥檛 end at graduation,鈥 says alumni lead, . 鈥淭he lessons learned on this field stay with you, and the bonds only grow stronger over time.鈥

South Kent鈥檚 soccer legacy now spans over 200 alumni players who have gone on to compete in college and beyond 鈥 including at the highest levels of the NCAA and the professional game. In the 2024 season alone:

  • Ethan Prescott and Marco Silva helped lead Marshall University to the NCAA Division I Final Four.
  • Nick Washington (Providence) and Maclin Stover (Fordham) also made the NCAA Tournament.
  • In Division III, Eujin Chae and Will Sawin (Middlebury), Adrian Trott, Luke Peltz (Bowdoin), and Aiden Heffner all advanced to postseason play, with Middlebury reaching the Final Four.

South Kent Soccer is more than a team 鈥 it鈥檚 a family, bonded across decades by shared goals, hard work, and a love of the game. We can鈥檛 wait to welcome alumni back to the Hillside in 2025 for what promises to be an unforgettable match and reunion.

Captain Ethan Prescott about to hoist the New England Championship trophy

For over a decade and a half 淫人色欲社 (SKS) Soccer has been a dominating force in the New England and the national soccer scene, this year has proven to be no different. With their November 21st win over Westminster School in the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) finals, South Kent Soccer secured their tenth New England Championship and their fifth National Championship.

鈥淚 am so proud of the guys and all they have achieved this year. This group overcame many obstacles 鈥 absences due to visa issues, multiple injuries to key players, and some difficult matches. However, their ability to learn from experience,聽come together as a group,聽support each other and聽persevere through difficult circumstances was remarkable. To come from behind in the first two rounds and play such a dominant game in the final聽is a testament to this team and the buy-in to the core values of this program,鈥 shared Director of Athletics and Head Soccer Coach Owen Finberg.

鈥淚t was so rewarding to defend our 2019 National and New England championships after not having had the chance to compete for those titles last year due to COVID. We graduated such a special group of players last year and it was important to represent for them and all our alumni who continually support us.鈥
2021 Sportsmen鈥檚/Cardinal Classic Champions

In this past season,聽the SKS聽Cardinals recorded 15 wins, 2 losses, and 3 draws against the top teams in our region. Included in our wins were five against teams ranked in the prepsoccer.net national poll! 聽Read the full Co-National Champions article here. 聽They also earned the Ray Brown Cup as Western New England Preparatory School Soccer Association (WNEPSSA) regular-season champions and won the Sportsmen鈥檚/Cardinal Classic title in early October.

Top Wins:

  • #5 Loomis Chaffee
  • #6 Black Rock FC Residential Academy Northwood
  • #8 Kiski
  • #9 Westminster School
  • #11 Rivers School
  • #15 Woodstock Academy

NEPSAC Player of the Year Matthew Bell (front), Danny Istambouli (center), Kelvin DaCosta (left), Max Dunphy(back)

During the Championship Quarterfinal SKS came from behind against #7 seeded Roxbury Latin with Matthew Bell 鈥22 scoring two goals in the second half to win 2-1. Then, in the Semifinal, the Cardinals were again down by one against #3 seeded Rivers, the Independent School League Champions, when right before halftime Steven Pickering Jr. 鈥22 tied the score. During a tense second half Matthew Bell managed to score a beautiful game-winner with only a few minutes remaining, to put the score at 2-1 and earn SKS鈥 place in the championship match.

In the final the Cardinals took on #4 Westminster at the Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, CT. Danny Istambouli scored the first two goals, with assists from Bell, and Marco Silva 鈥22 scored the final goal, bringing the score to 3-0 as the Cardinals finished their season as the NEPSAC Champions! 聽Special recognition goes to Max Dunphy 鈥22 for his stellar play in goal for all three playoff games.

鈥淲e had a lot of work to do when we arrived in August with so many new players to our program. It is a truly incredible feeling to have all our hard work pay off and finish the season as New England and National Champions. It was a special season that will connect this group together forever,鈥 said Team Captain Ethan Prescott.

Congratulations to the boys, Coach Finberg, assistant coaches, support staff and the whole community who helped in their remarkable showing this season!

The season may be over, but that does not mean these guys are finished, as in past years these boys will continue working hard through to the end of the school year to ensure their continued development and that the graduating players secure admission to the best possible schools. Follow the Cardinals on social media to stay up to date with all of the team鈥檚 happenings.

South Kent, CT, June 7, 2021 鈥 Three 淫人色欲社 (SKS) alumni, Vinicius (Vini) Fernandes 鈥18, Alexander Adjetey 鈥19 and Alejandro Giner Murillo 鈥20, are members of the history-making Marshall University men鈥檚 soccer team, who clinched their first ever National Championship victory in May.

The 10th-ranked Marshall Thundering Herd defeated the 3rd-ranked Indiana Hoosiers 1-0 in overtime in the NCAA Division I College Cup. The SKS alumni all got to share in the pride of their team鈥檚 triumph.

Coach Finberg giving his team a prep talk before the 2017 Regional Championships.

鈥淚鈥檓 not surprised to see the success from these guys, who all won Top Drawer Soccer Prep School National Championships at South Kent,鈥 said Owen Finberg, 淫人色欲社 Athletic Director and Head Prep Soccer Coach.

Fernandes, a midfielder with Marshall, was a major contributor in the championship match, earning a spot on the NCAA All-Tournament Team. He was also a standout during this impressive season, which included surprise upsets like Marshall鈥檚 win against the No. 1 seed Clemson Tigers, advancing them to the Elite 8 and defeating defending champion Georgetown to advance to the Final Four. The three 淫人色欲社 alumni trained together daily throughout the season, 鈥渓ooking after each other鈥 with the one goal of winning the championship. 鈥淪haring this feeling with my brothers from SKS makes it even more special,鈥 Fernandes said.

Preparation leads to success, and Fernandes emphasized that SKS instilled in him the mindset to help him achieve just that. 淫人色欲社鈥檚 program cultivates excellence and encourages student-athletes to value even the small things, he noted. 鈥淚f I hadn鈥檛 taken pride in everything I did and looked for excellence during practice and off the pitch with my teammates, in the locker room and classroom, I wouldn鈥檛 have been able to adapt and become an important part of the team like I did,鈥 he said. 鈥溡松 has brought this culture for students鈥撯搕he culture of excellence鈥撯揳nd I think that made it possible for me, Alejandro and Alex to become national champions and step up and help the team like we did.鈥

Adjetey, a transfer to Marshall this season, added: 鈥溡松 really prepared me in both academics and soccer…and in so many ways: respect, being on time in everything, finishing assignments on time, making new friends easily, embracing the hard work. Words can’t explain how grateful I am to be part of the SKS community.鈥

Giner Murillo shared the impact of the challenging academics and athletics at 淫人色欲社 leading to his freshman year at Marshall: 鈥淚n my experience, Coach Finberg prepares you not only to play but to succeed at the DI soccer level. I can say with no doubt that SKS has one of the best prep soccer programs in the country, and the titles and numbers are the evidence. Not only as a student but as a person, 淫人色欲社 prepared me to be a disciplined and respectful young man, and above everything, a good person.鈥

Marshall鈥檚 roster will benefit from two more excellent student-athletes this fall, as and Kymani McNeil 鈥21 join the Herd鈥檚 ranks. The five 淫人色欲社 alumni will help build upon Marshall鈥檚 already stellar momentum as national champions and back-to-back Conference USA champions.

鈥淲e say, 鈥榖ig players make big plays in big games,鈥 and Vini certainly did throughout this run,鈥 Finberg added. 鈥淲hile Alejandro and Alex were limited as first year and transfer players, respectively, I have no doubt that they will bring that quality as they look to repeat as champions this fall.鈥
