��ɫ�� proudly congratulates Chris Birden Jr. ’26 on his commitment to the University of Miami. A dominant presence on the court, Chris has established himself as one of the top power forwards in prep basketball, earning the opportunity to continue his career at the Division I level.

Arriving on the Hillside from Louisiana, Chris has fully embraced the boarding school experience, developing into a confident and mature student leader. Both on and off the court, he has exemplified dedication, resilience, and character, using his time on the Hillside to prepare for the challenges and opportunities ahead. On the court, Chris brings elite athleticism combined with knockdown 3-point shooting, making him a tough matchup on both ends. He rebounds at a high level and runs the floor extremely well in transition, creating constant pressure.

Chris’s growth on the Hillside is a direct reflection of South Kent’s individualized approach to player development. Through tailored and consistent training and a focus on both skill refinement and basketball IQ, he has used his time here with intention. That commitment has shaped him into a confident, mature player who understands the game at a high level and leads by example, fully maximizing every opportunity along the way.

South Kent’s Tomass Rutulis ’26 Commits to Princeton

��ɫ�� is proud to congratulate 18U Prep goaltender Tomass Rutulis ’26 on his recent commitment to Princeton University. A standout on the ice and in the classroom, Rutulis has distinguished himself as one of the premier goaltenders at the prep level, earning the opportunity to continue his academic and athletic career at an Ivy League.

Arriving on the Hillside as a Third Former from his home in Latvia, Rutulis has fully embraced the boarding school experience, developing into a confident and mature student leader. Both on and off the ice, he has exemplified dedication, resilience, and character, using his time on the Hillside to prepare for the challenges and opportunities ahead.

Over his three years with the Hockey program, Rutulis has been a cornerstone in net, known for his consistency, composure, and relentless work ethic. His ability to rise to the moment has made him a trusted presence for his team and a respected leader within the program.

“Tomass has time and time again demonstrated that he is one of the top goaltenders at this level over his last three years at South Kent,” said 18U Prep Head Coach Ryan Bliss. “The consistency he brings in his compete level and work ethic every day is second to none, and it has been a pleasure to coach him for the last three years. Students Gain Real-World Filmmaking Experience with South Kent Alumnus

��ɫ�� students recently had the unique opportunity to step behind the camera and into the world of professional filmmaking, as our Photography & Digital Media class, along with members of the Advanced Media Group, participated in an immersive, hands-on course led by alumnus John Miller ’08.

Now based in Houston, Texas, Miller returned to the Hillside with a meaningful purpose: to film footage for an upcoming documentary on fellow South Kent alumnus Isaiah Thomas ’08, a professional basketball player and 2x NBA All-Star. Having been part of an Emmy Award–winning multimedia project based in Seattle, Miller brought both high-level experience and creative insight to campus. The project not only provided students with real-world filmmaking experience, but also created a powerful full-circle moment for alumni and students alike.

For Miller, coming back to South Kent was about more than just the project.
“The Hillside had a profound impact on me, and this was just one way I could give back,” he shared.

Throughout the experience, students were not simply observers; they were active collaborators. Miller encouraged them to think creatively, contribute ideas, and engage in the storytelling process.

“The students actually helped me a lot in the storytelling experience. I provided them the opportunity to have creative input, and in return, I received several great shots of the campus that I wouldn’t have captured �ǳٳ��ɾ��.”

In addition to gaining hands-on experience, students’ contributions may extend far beyond the classroom. The on-campus footage they helped capture, through camera operation, shot composition, and creative direction, positions them for inclusion in the film’s credits should the documentary be picked up by a major distributor such as ESPN or The Players’ Tribune. It’s a rare and meaningful opportunity for students to see their work recognized on a professional stage.

Moments like these highlighted not only the students’ growing technical skills, but also their confidence and creativity; qualities that are continually nurtured on the Hillside. Above all, the experience reflected the joy of the creative process and the supportive environment that makes it possible.

“We had fun. It’s fun to be creative, and I think SKS provides an environment where it’s safe to be yourself.”

By blending professional-level work with student collaboration, this immersive course exemplified the kind of hands-on, meaningful learning that defines the South Kent experience, where alumni return to inspire, and students are empowered to create.

Beyond the Classroom: A Week of Experiential Learning

Experiential Learning Week has become a winter staple in ��ɫ��’s academic calendar. Launching in 2024, this week of meaningful learning outside the regular class schedule has become a community favorite. English faculty member, Sadie Cohen, who led efforts in designing the week of programming, stated that, “Courses focus on practical skills, personal interests, or passions outside core academics, providing diverse learning experiences for our students.”

A sample of the 2026 courses included:

Leather-working
Culinary experiences making homemade pasta, ice cream, dumplings, gluten-free baking, and more
Golf-course design and architecture
College tours
Carpentry
Yoga & Meditation
Wilderness First Aid Training with our community partner, Adventure Discovery

Beyond these daily course offerings, students also enjoyed a variety of evening programs. From relaxed community gatherings, such as a make-your-own pizza night, to creative sessions in our SKS Maker Space, the evenings offered students meaningful opportunities to unwind, connect, and decompress after full days of experiential learning.

Experiential Learning Week reflects ��ɫ��’s commitment to a truly holistic education, one that extends well beyond textbooks and classrooms. Centered around student choice, the week gives students the freedom to follow their own interests, explore new passions, and step outside their comfort zones to try something new. With faculty, staff, and campus partners all taking part, the week becomes a shared community experience focused on helping students not only build practical skills but also create lasting memories in a supportive, dynamic environment.

Pathway Series: The ‘86 South Kent Crew That Rowed at Henley

��ɫ�� is proud to welcome back members of the Class of 1986 for a special Pathways conversation, “.” In this conversation, we reunite some of the legendary oarsmen and coaches behind one of the most extraordinary chapters in South Kent’s athletic history: the 1986 crew that competed in the , the oldest rowing competition in the world, held before the Royal Family on the Thames in London. .

The conversation features Coach and Alumnus Sid Stockdale ‘73, alongside alumni Andy Goddard ’87, Duffy Camins ’89, Nicholas Butts ’87, Ransom Duncan ’86, Henry Brownell ’86, and Stephen Nahley ’86, as they share memories of their training, camaraderie, and the once-in-a-lifetime experience of representing South Kent on rowing’s most storied stage.

A Legacy of Grit and Greatness

South Kent’s crew program in the 1980s was a model of discipline and determination. Early spring training was famously demanding, Hatch Pond’s bitter winds and icy waters forged some of the toughest rowers in New England. Coach Smith often said, “South Kent crews are never beaten by being out of shape,” and his 1984-86 teams embodied that philosophy.

In 1984, with only six returning varsity members, competition for boat seats was fierce. Even the novice crews rose to the challenge under the leadership of Stephen Nahley, the third boat won its Petite Final at Quinsigamond, the only crew that day to triumph from the toughest lane on the course.

By 1985, South Kent’s program had become one of the strongest in the region. The first boat missed victory against rival Salisbury by just 1.2 seconds, while the second boat nearly toppled Choate’s first. At Quinsig, South Kent’s top crew finished second in New England just one second behind Belmont Hill.

The Road to Henley

In 1986, South Kent’s momentum continued. With close to twelve boats and even a solo sculler, the team dominated Pomfret, Gunnery, and Choate, and placed second overall at Quinsig, only five seconds behind a record-setting winner. The lower boats brought home the prize oar from Salisbury, and Coaches Smith and Stockdale recognized that South Kent’s strength that year could take them across the Atlantic.

For the first time in twenty years, South Kent would return to the Henley Royal Regatta. The group trained rigorously on Hatch Pond and then in Brugge, Belgium, before crossing the English Channel to Henley.

For the boys from South Kent, rowing at Henley wasn’t just a race it was a moment of history, a culmination of years of discipline and teamwork, and a proud representation of what makes South Kent athletics so enduring.

Looking Back, Rowing Forward

Nearly four decades later, these alumni return to the Hillside to reflect on what the journey taught them about leadership, perseverance, and brotherhood. Their Pathways talk reminds today’s students that excellence is built not only through talent, but through relentless preparation and the courage to chase big dreams across oceans.

Pathway Series: Sid Stockdale ’73 on Legacy & Leadership

Sid Stockdale ’73, distinguished alumnus, former faculty member, current board member, and son of the late , joined ��ɫ�� for a conversation. This special event serves as a preview to Sid’s upcoming Veterans Day keynote on November 12th, where he will share the remarkable story of his parents, Admiral James and , the namesakes of South Kent’s hockey arena, the Admiral James and Sybil Stockdale Arena.

Sid will return to campus on November 12th to speak live to students. His talk will reflect on the enduring lessons of leadership, sacrifice, and resilience that his family’s story represents, and the principles that are also central to South Kent’s Stockdale Leadership Academy.

In this virtual session, Sid offered a personal and moving account of his journey to South Kent and his life growing up as the son of one of America’s most respected military leaders. His recently published book serves as the basis for much of the conversation, offering candid reflections on family, identity, and what it means to live in the shadow, and light of greatness.

His father, Vice Admiral James Stockdale, the legendary naval aviator and Medal of Honor recipient, is one of the most decorated officers in U.S. Navy history. Stockdale is also the namesake of the Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership at the . Captured during the Vietnam War, Admiral Stockdale spent over seven years as a prisoner of war, during which he withstood extraordinary hardship and became a symbol of Stoic virtues of courage, moral clarity, and unwavering honor.

Beyond his military service, Admiral Stockdale was a noted scholar of philosophy and ethics, and even a vice-presidential candidate in 1992. His principled leadership and intellectual rigor continue to influence generations of leaders and thinkers.

Sid’s talk is more than a historical reflection, it’s a deeply personal story of family values, quiet strength, and the lifelong impact of growing up under the example of a true American hero. His session will include a brief presentation followed by an open Q&A, allowing students to engage directly with this powerful narrative.

This is a rare and meaningful opportunity to connect with the Stockdale legacy firsthand and to reflect on the deeper meaning of service, leadership, and what it truly means to live a life of purpose.

This fall, ��ɫ�� proudly kicks off its Pathway Career Panel series with a dynamic event focused on Technology Career Paths. On Wednesday, September 24th, we welcome industry leaders and South Kent alumni from Google, Cisco, and Salesforce to share their journeys and insights on navigating careers in tech—from the Hillside to the global stage.

This panel is open to 5th & 6th Form students as part of their collaboration with the College Counseling Office. As students begin identifying potential college destinations, they are also exploring professional pathways through South Kent’s new Life Lab & Graduate Workshop Series, led by Kathleen Lindenmayer ‘79. This initiative introduces a design thinking approach to help students discover career paths aligned with their interests, strengths, and evolving goals.
