For nearly a century, this beloved play has been a central part of the South Kent holiday season, bringing the story of Jesus鈥� birth to life for students and their families. The tradition holds deep meaning, especially as the School, with its Episcopal foundation, embraces the power of prayer through its chapel services. Each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, students gather for chapel services, which serve to nourish their spirits and strengthen their resolve for the week ahead.

The Nativity Play is more than just a performance鈥攊t is a beautiful retelling of the Christmas story through the accounts of the Gospels of Luke and Matthew. According to The Reverend Father Klots, School Chaplain, 鈥淭he Nativity Play uses scripture from the King James Version of the Bible鈥搕o recount the birth of Jesus. It also uses many of the great Christmas carols鈥搊nes that almost everyone knows like 鈥淥 Come, All Ye Faithful鈥�– to echo and proclaim that same story. The script that we use is the same one that was compiled in the late 1920s. I would say that it simply tells the whole story鈥揻rom the first scene, which actually recounts a prophecy of the birth of John the Baptist to the final scene, the visitation of the three wise men (the three kings) to see the Baby Jesus in Bethlehem.鈥�

鈥淲hat makes this play so special is not just its heartfelt storytelling, but its ability to resonate deeply with the students,鈥� says Head of School, Brian D. Sullivan. 鈥淲hile many traditions have evolved since South Kent鈥檚 founding in 1923, I see some as more than just customs 鈥� they are woven into the very fabric of our daily life. This is one tradition that stands out as uniquely South Kent, something we do once a year that truly defines us.鈥� Adds Mr. Sullivan, 鈥淎t Alumni Weekend, it鈥檚 not uncommon to hear stories about who played the kings in their Sixth Form year 鈥� these shared moments transcend time, linking us all as part of the South Kent legacy.鈥�

鈥淚t鈥檚 the event that leaves a lasting imprint on all who experience it, creating memories that connect generations of graduates,鈥� says The Reverend Klots. 鈥淔or all who hold South Kent dear, especially at this sacred time of year, the Nativity Play is a special opportunity to witness the timeless story of Christ鈥檚 birth in the beautiful setting of our School chapel.

淫人色欲社 invites all members of the campus community to join us for this special event, which will follow the School鈥檚 Formal Christmas Dinner at 5:30 PM. Come experience the spirit of the season in the heart of St. Michael鈥檚 Chapel, and share in this time of warmth, reflection, and joy with the South Kent community.

Participating for the second time, 淫人色欲社 stood out with two memorable contributions: a vibrant group of carolers and a creative float aptly named 鈥淧ond Hockey.鈥� Designed and built by dedicated employees and their families, the float celebrated South Kent鈥檚 winter traditions, blending the excitement of hockey with the magic of the season. The float delighted onlookers as it traveled through Kent鈥檚 bustling streets, radiating the school鈥檚 ingenuity and strong community spirit.

Accompanying the float was an ad hoc choir of South Kent students, led by The Reverend Steve Klots, the School鈥檚 chaplain. Though assembling the group was a last-minute effort鈥攎any chapel choir members, who are also hockey players, were already scheduled to be at the School鈥檚 Stockdale Arena for an 18U Prep hockey game鈥攖he lively singers delivered festive tunes with enthusiasm and joy. 鈥淭he whole event was great fun,鈥� said The Reverend Klots. 鈥淪taying in sync while we were marching proved to be a bit of a challenge, but the boys fully embraced the moment, and we鈥檙e already looking forward to next year!鈥�
