Visitors to the 淫人色欲社 website now enjoy an easier time exploring campus鈥攖hanks to a group of innovative students in the Introduction to Computer Programming: HTML (T3 2025) class. Under the guidance of STEM Faculty member Mr. Timothy Smith, students spent the spring trimester building an interactive HTML-based campus map from the ground up.

The project was a full-class collaboration, with students divided into teams to manage different technical aspects. One group identified the exact x-y coordinates of buildings on a base image file. Another sourced and verified building URLs from the school鈥檚 website. A third team brought it all together, writing and testing the HTML code to link the coordinates and URLs seamlessly.

鈥淭his was a hands-on way for students to apply what they鈥檝e learned in a meaningful, visible way,鈥� said Mr. Smith. 鈥淭hey weren鈥檛 just coding for practice鈥攖hey were solving a real-world problem and building something the School can use.鈥�

The final HTML version was consolidated and polished by Mr. Smith before being submitted to the School鈥檚 local web developer, Jonathan Matson at . With the new map live, visitors are able to click on different buildings to learn more about each location across the Hillside.

The visit was a continuation of an academic partnership that began in the fall, when Grzegrz贸艂ka joined South Kent faculty member and Syracuse University adjunct professor Joseph Barowski for a class observation and a long discussion about pedagogical strategies in calculus instruction. Inspired by that visit, Barowski invited Grzegrz贸艂ka back to the Hillside to deliver a lecture during the second trimester of the course.

The guest lecture focused on power series expansions of exponential and trigonometric functions such as e^x, sin(x), and cos(x)鈥攁n elegant application of recent classroom work on convergent and divergent series. The topic served not only as a deep reinforcement of learned concepts, but also as a bridge to the class鈥檚 next major topic: Taylor Series, widely regarded as the climax of a rigorous Calculus II curriculum.

鈥淚t was a privilege to have Dr. Grzegrz贸艂ka join us in the classroom,鈥� said Barowski. 鈥淥ur students got a firsthand look at how university-level mathematics is taught, and how the concepts we cover here are preparing them for what鈥檚 next.鈥�

The class鈥檚 small size offered a unique advantage. 鈥淚 loved that it was a more intimate learning experience for the class, with only five students,鈥� one student shared. 鈥淲e had the chance to ask questions directly and go deeper into the material.鈥�

Grzegrz贸艂ka鈥檚 visit reflects 淫人色欲社鈥檚 continued commitment to personalized, advanced academics鈥攑articularly in STEM fields where students can benefit from direct exposure to collegiate faculty and content.

A highlight of the day was observing the live control room for ESPN鈥檚 flagship show First Take, where producers worked in real time to incorporate breaking news into the broadcast. The students saw firsthand how coordination, speed, and creativity come together to shape what millions of viewers see on screen.

鈥淚t was amazing to see how many different careers branch out from sports broadcasting and television production,鈥� said Ms. Borsavage. 鈥淭his trip gave our students a clearer picture of how the work they鈥檙e doing with AMG today can lead to future opportunities鈥攚hether in production, journalism, editing, or digital content creation. They walked away inspired, and we鈥檙e excited to see where this experience will take them.鈥�

The trip also gave students a sense of how rapidly media technologies have evolved鈥攁nd a glimpse into the future of digital storytelling. South Kent Students Dive into Android-Based App Development with MIT App Inventor

Early lessons focus on user interface (UI) design and the actions triggered when users tap or swipe their screens. Building on these fundamentals, students have now embarked on a more advanced project: creating a digital version of the classic arcade game 鈥淲丑补肠办-础-惭辞濒别.鈥� This engaging exercise requires them to integrate dynamic user interaction, timing mechanisms, and score tracking鈥攁ll while emphasizing collaborative problem-solving.

STEM faculty member, Tim Smith, who teaches the App Inventor class, says, 鈥淚 feel programming, also known as coding, is both a science and an art. It is a science because of the use of technology, structure and discipline. While there are multiple paths to a solution, each path does have its own set of rules. It is an art because, essentially, you start with a blank canvas and create something that has never existed before. I try to take these two ideas and incorporate them into all of the teaching I do, so our students understand that science also has its own beauty and purpose.鈥�

Before coding began, the class held a design discussion to plan functionality, user interface flow, and overall gameplay experience. Such discussions reflect real-world software development practices, highlighting how thoughtful planning is essential for successful projects.

By the end of the term, students will have gained valuable experience in both the technical and creative aspects of mobile app development, opening doors to further exploration in the rapidly growing field of software engineering.
