On Friday, September 12, we proudly launched our first major culinary event of the 2025-26 academic year in the North Campus kitchen, and what a fantastic evening it was. The night brought students together for an enjoyable cooking experience, flavored by laughter and creativity.

The highlight of the evening was a special twist on the popular Chopped competition, where teams of students faced off in a friendly culinary showdown, making the most of our incredible North Campus kitchen and classroom. These sessions are crafted to spark curiosity and develop culinary skills, challenging participants to combine speed, technique, and imagination under time pressure.

How does it all work? Each team is given a basic overview of their dish, and from there, it’s up to them to bring the flavors to life. This week鈥檚 theme embraced global cuisine, spotlighting Indian culinary traditions. Participants took on the challenge of crafting a flavorful Mulligatawny soup appetizer, followed by a curry chicken entr茅e.

Three enthusiastic teams, each聽made up of two talented boys, stepped into the kitchen arena. With ten minutes for brainstorming聽and planning, followed by 30鈥45 minutes of cooking, they raced against the clock to prepare and beautifully plate their dishes for our discerning judges.

Our amazing participants included: Pat C., Kevin H., Aidan S., John D., Yuri N., Robert K., and Julian V. From bold, authentic flavors to wildly creative off-menu innovations, including the peculiar “chicken cookie,鈥 the evening was packed with surprises and memorable moments!

After much deliberation, the judges awarded Julian V. and John D. first prize for their perfectly spiced chicken curry served over rice鈥攁 true standout dish!

We鈥檙e excited to continue this culinary journey with more Chopped competitions and other cooking events throughout the year. The energy and enthusiasm shown by our students are just the beginning of what promises to be a deliciously rewarding year. Special thanks goes out to Ms. Borsavage for all of her help and enthusiasm on getting the event off the ground.

Yes, Chef!

While spring rain may have delayed the opening ceremonies, nothing could dampen the spirit of South Kent鈥檚 Second Annual Spring Cardinal Olympics. On the afternoon of Tuesday, May 20th, students gathered in Assembly Hall for a rundown of the day鈥檚 events and expectations鈥攅ager to embrace friendly competition and one last chance to make Hillside memories before Prize Day.

Teams of students, led by faculty and staff captains, participated in a variety of events designed to showcase skill, sportsmanship, and a healthy dose of fun. The competition lineup included a closest-to-the-pin golf challenge, an 鈥渆questrian-style鈥 stick horse relay around Lew鈥檚 Lagoon, an archery-based water squirter contest, beach volleyball, pickleball, and a round of 3v3 basketball. Each team was also tasked with coming up with a creative name to show their camaraderie and team spirit.

As always, the day was full of surprises and standout moments. Pablo Ortega impressed everyone with a hidden golf talent that earned key points for his team. Adam Chiacchia made his presence known in volleyball, using his height and power to dominate the front line. When Team Typlouffeski was short a few players, faculty leaders Anthony Tyburski and Sam Plouffe laced up and stepped in to compete alongside their students鈥epitomizing the all-in community spirit that defines South Kent.

After an action-packed afternoon, team scores were tallied, and a rare tie for first place emerged. To break the deadlock, a dramatic, winner-take-all rock-paper-scissors showdown was held at dinner. In front of a roaring crowd, Miguel Juste of Team FK Elite edged out Andrew Mohesky of Team Bass/Johnson with a decisive paper-over-rock victory.

Congratulations to Team FK Elite鈥攍ed by Father Klots and Colin Hodge鈥攚ho took home the gold. Team 鈥淭he Beauties,鈥 led by Rob Belger and Drew Lambert, rounded out the podium in third.

The Spring Cardinal Olympics have quickly become a much-loved Hillside tradition鈥攂lending creativity, competition, and community in a way that is uniquely South Kent. Here鈥檚 to another successful year, and to the Class of 2025 as they prepare for the next chapter!

淫人色欲社鈥檚 Annual Cardinal Games continued in spectacular fashion yesterday with our very own Winter Olympics, a day packed with excitement, competition, and unforgettable moments. With classes canceled and a late start to the day, students and faculty embraced the perfect New England winter weather鈥攕tarting off crisp but quickly warming to a comfortable 31掳F under sunny skies.

Advisory teams, consisting of two advisors and their students, rotated through eight different events, testing their skills, teamwork, and school spirit. The competitions ranged from athletic challenges to winter-themed fun, with one particularly popular stop: a s鈥檓ores bonfire by the pond, where students could warm up, enjoy some classic winter treats, and sip on hot cocoa, which was available all day.

Unforgettable Moments from the Games:

The Winter Olympics produced plenty of highlight-worthy moments, proving that this event is not just about competition鈥攊t鈥檚 about community, laughter, and creating memories. Some of the most talked-about moments of the day included:

馃敟 Students Ditching Phones for Sleds 鈥 At one point, a group of students eagerly handed over their phones just so they could fully enjoy sledding without distractions. A rare sight and a testament to the fun had on the Hillside!

Harry Scott 鈥25 vs. Coach Hodge 鈥 In what almost became a legendary moment, Harry Scott 鈥25 nearly struck out Coach Hodge, but Colin got bailed out thanks to a hit-by-pitch. We鈥檒l count it as a close call!

馃殌 Brian鈥檚 Home Run to the Stratosphere 鈥 With the game on the line, Brian Vega 鈥28 sent a ball into orbit, tying up the score and sending the crowd into a frenzy.

鉂勶笍 Telmo鈥檚 Sledding Streak 鈥 We lost count of how many times Telmo Reino Perez 鈥26 flew down the hill, but it was clear he was determined to set a record for most sled runs in a single day.

馃张 QB Javi to WR Zeek for the Game-Winning TD 鈥 In a thrilling football showdown, Javier Landin Madrid 鈥25 launched a perfect deep ball to Isaiah 鈥榋eek鈥 Young 鈥25, who sealed the win with an epic touchdown catch.

馃幙 Vignesh鈥檚 High-Speed Descent 鈥 In a moment reminiscent of National Lampoon鈥檚 sledding scene, Vignesh Reddy Paila 鈥25 rocketed down the hill at lightning speed, barely avoiding Lew鈥檚 on his sled.

More Than Just Games:

While the Winter Olympics were full of competition, the true spirit of the event shone through in the camaraderie, laughter, and shared experiences. Our South Kent Winter Olympics were a reminder of what makes Hillside special鈥攐ur strong community, our willingness to step outside and enjoy life together, and our ability to turn a simple winter day into an unforgettable event.

As we continue our Cardinal Games, the next round of outdoor Olympics will be in the Spring. Stay tuned.馃弲馃敟鉂勶笍
